THE LAST FILMMAKER

When the audience is gone,

does the dream live on?

about the film

Many artists will tell you that their passion - their art - is as much a part of them as their right arm, as integral to their being as their heart, as representative of their personality as their sense of humor, their fears, their loves. The creation of art arguably cannot be separated from the expression of self.

It is a rather remarkable facet of humanity - that the self, whatever it is, can be so profoundly communicated through music, dance, film, theatre, literature, painting, photography... all manner of art.

But what if there were no longer anyone with whom to communicate?

Throughout our lives we learn and explore so much by the telling of stories. Like many artists, filmmakers are storytellers.  What would a filmmaker do if there were no one left to hear the story?

Our film follows a solitary soul, the last person on Earth, as she navigates the quiet lonely world. Before catastrophe struck, our heroine was a passionate filmmaker, and that passion for creating art and telling stories has not been wiped out with the rest of humanity. Continuing the creative process now requires some innovative techniques and improvised equipment, but at least location permits and background noise from passing airplanes are no longer a concern.   However, more important than the HOW is the WHY.

What drives her to continue making films when she knows no one will ever see them?

Is she honoring or evading the ghosts of her previous life?

For whom is she telling the story?

Part science fiction,  part documentary,  part music video,  part survival film,  part me,  part you,

The Last Filmmaker is a love letter to the magic of film, the passion of filmmakers, and the mysterious yet vital role the audience plays in the creation of art.

A true Charleston film

The Last Filmmaker is a completely Charleston-based production, from the mind of a writer/director with local roots, using local talent and local crew. The film was shot entirely at locations in the beautiful and historic Charleston area. The soundtrack also is a collaboration of local artists performing original work. We hope to raise awareness of the rich visual, musical, and historical elements that the Charleston area has to offer for filmmakers from around the world.
